  • Compass use
  • Clothing selection
  • Physical conditioning

  • Participants are taught skills to safely enjoy the wilderness. These skills are taught in ten lecture classes and are practiced in overnight outings: Car Camp, Mountain/Desert Backpack, Land Navigation Backpack, and Snow Camp Backpack.
  • Our goal is to share our knowledge and skills in the safe enjoyment of wilderness areas and to convey a sense of responsibility for maintaining the purity and integrity of the wilderness environment.

The Wilderness Basics Course is a hiking, camping and backpacking course offered once a year by the San Diego chapter of the Sierra Club. The WBC starts at the end of January and finishes...



Participants must supply their own equipment which may be rented from many sporting goods stores. Information about equipment will be covered in the course lectures.
