Course Schedule - Procedures

Welcome to the Wilderness Basics Course. We look forward to working with you. Listed below is short description on how the class will proceed:

  1. Every night as you enter the hall, there will be handouts on the table to the right. Please take a moment and pick up each of these handouts.
  2. If the class you are attending is a "trip sign up night" you will also need to go to the front of the hall next to the stage and pick up your individual trip sign up sheet. These sheets are filed alphabetically, so look for the WBC staff member who has the letter of your last name and ask for your sheet.
  3. Once you receive this sheet please take a moment to fill out the information needed and sign the bottom of the form.
  4. The trip leaders arrive at 6:45 PM on these "trip sign up nights" so that they may answer any individual questions that the students might have. You should use this time to walk around the room introducing yourself to the leaders and getting your individual questions answered.
  5. The easier trips are at the very back of the hall away from the stage with the hardest trips being closer to the stage.
  6. Once the class starts, the leaders of each trip will be asked to come on stage and give a brief talk about their trip.
  7. You will need to choose two or three trips that meet your interest and ability. Some trips fill up very quickly with each trip being limited to 10-12 students, depending on the type of trip. So if the trip you wanted is full, you will need an alternate trip chosen ahead of time.
  8. Signing up for these trips goes very quickly and there is no time for leaders to talk to any students during this actual sign up phase. If you have individual questions, you will need to ask the leader your questions before the WBC class starts.
  9. On the upper right hand side of your trip sign up sheet is a Priority Number. This number will stay the same for you through out the course.
  10. Priority numbers have been established so that only one fourth of the class will be signing up trips at any one time.
  11. On the first trip (Car Camp) Priority #1 will be called to sign up for an trip, once they are sign in for that trip these students will return to their seats, and then Priority # 2 will be asked to sign up for their trips. Once they have completed their sign up, then Priority #3 will be called and last will be Priority #4.
  12. On the second trip (Land Navigation), Priority #2 will be called first, then #3, #4 and last #1.
  13. On the third trip (Mtn./Desert Backpack) Priority #3 will be called first, then #4, # 1 and last #2.
  14. On the last trip (Snow Camp) Priority #4 will be called first, then #1, #2, and then #4.
  15. Thus every student's Priority number will have a chance to sign up first on at least one trip.
  16. You will have a chance to meet with your new trip leader, and fellow student participants, during the next scheduled WBC class. On that night, after you have picked up the new handouts, you will go to the circle of chairs that has been assigned to your leader. Here you will spend the next 30 to 45 minutes discussing different aspects of the trip with you leader.
  17. Once you have completed this meeting with the leader, please take a few minutes and move the chairs back to their normal position in a straight line with a large aisle down the middle to get ready for the next speaker.
  18. If you arrive for class after 7:00 PM, do not enter through the normal double doors. This is very disruptive to the speakers. Please go to the next set of doors in that same hallway.
  19. At the end of class you will need to have your WBC Student Membership card "punch" by the WBC staff that will be stationed by the exit doors. Please be sure to make sure you did not leave any of your belongings behind.
  20. If for some reason the parking lot is full, you are authorized to park in the JCC parking structure, directly across/south of Executive Dr.
